Free Weather Tool For Photographers

Megan Tucker, a student and photographer at Bentley University built a new suite of web-based tools for photographers. Called LightCast Suite it is a free, browser-based site that scores conditions for sunset photography, astrophotography, and drone flying. It pulls real weather data and gives the photographer a plain-English verdict: is it worth going out tonight? Where nearby might have better skies? What time is the golden hour window? Can my drone handle the weather? What will the Milky Way be doing? You can also sign up for email alerts to be notified when the light is worth chasing. No account is required and (yay!) no ads. In the past month since its launch, it’s reached 575 users across 55 countries and 6 continents, mostly through word of mouth in photography communities online…pretty impressive! Looking at it, the Board thought that the web interface is simple, elegant, accurate, and useful. It may not replace the numerous detailed apps many of us have but it is simplified and cuts to the chase.
