General

  • Each competition season consists of 3 rounds, in November, February, and April. Submission deadlines are November 1, February 1, and April 1.
  • You may enter one or more of these PSA divisions each round of the 2022-23 season:  Nature (ND), Projected Image-Open Color (PID-c), and  Projected Image-Open Monochrome (PID-m).
  • ND emphasizes an honest, natural-appearing image of a nature story, emphasis on the nature story (think animal interactions). Anything that shows "the hand of man" is not allowed, with a few controversial exceptions, fully described in the PSA Guidelines for ND.
  • The PID-Open division we entered last season is now divided into Open Color and Open Monochrome. There are no subject or processing restrictions for PID-Color.
  • PID-Monochrome may be Black and White or single-toned (e.g. sepia) images. Duotoned, multitoned, or partially colorized images are considered Color images and should be submitted in that category.
  • Submit no more than 2 images per division per round. No more than one will be selected for entry, however.
  • Any image submitted to PSA for the competition may never be used again in that division (e.g. Nature Interclub).
  • A color image previously entered in the PID Open competition may be converted to monochrome and submitted to the PID-Open Monochrome section, but the image title of the monochrome photo must be the same one used for the original color image.
  • A PSA release form certifying you as sole creator of the photo, and allowing PSA to show off your image on their website, must be on file before your images can be uploaded to PSA. They are valid for 3 years, so if you completed one last year you're good to go.  The form and instructions may be found here.

Image Requirements

  • Image Size: "Horizontal images will be no more than 1400 pixels wide or 1050 pixels tall. Vertical images will be no more than 1050 pixels tall. Unless your image proportions are in the exact ratio of 4 to 3, one of these dimensions will be less than the maximum. The images will be projected as received, as long as not over the maximum." (quoted from the PSA Interclub Guidelines site). So, if your image is more square than a 4:3, reduce the size to 1050 pixels vertical.
  • With the small size limits, it might be prudent to delay final sharpening until after you have reduced the image to the final size. There are no file size limitations but try not to exceed 5 Mb.
  • jpg format, sRGB color space.
  • File naming (This is the only way I know who's image this is): LastName_FirstName_Title (for example: Kodak_Joe_Delicate Arch.jpg) Title limit is 36 characters.
